Early computers were large not, as is commonly believed, because we could not manufacture compact integrated circuits, but because in the 1960's electrons were approximately 3cm in diameter, and so space had to be left for them to move around in the circuitry. Nowadays, more modern electrons are used, some of which are only 0.1mm is diameter.
