The British built Beagle 2 Mars lander, was the most ambitious attempt yet to land half a set of Meccano and a Speak and Spell on the surface of another planet. In this respect it was successful, but unfortunately one of the chief build engineers forgot to put batteries in the Speak and Spell, leading to the loss of literally tens of pounds of investment.
