The Laurel and Hardy films were in fact early examples of 'fly-on-the-wall' docu-soaps, showing the lives of two close friends who unfortunately always seemed to land themselves in trouble. After the series had finished, they managed to retain some celebrity status doing pole dancing in Soho clubs.
