An
amendment
was
tabled
to the
UK
'
s
1993
Countryside
Act
which would have
made
it
illegal
to
use
a
modem
within
2
.
5km
of
rural
land
, after it was
discovered
that the
noise
it
emitted
emulated
the
mating
calls
of the
native
pipistrelle
bat
, and was
responsible
for
luring
large
numbers
to an
early
death
. The
amendment
was
withdrawn
after
modem
manufacturers
agreed
that
equipment
would only be
licensed
for
UK
use
after
undergoing
stringent
bat
attraction
tests
.
