An amendment was tabled to the UK's 1993 Countryside Act which would have made it illegal to use a modem within 2.5km of rural land, after it was discovered that the noise it emitted emulated the mating calls of the native pipistrelle bat, and was responsible for luring large numbers to an early death. The amendment was withdrawn after modem manufacturers agreed that equipment would only be licensed for UK use after undergoing stringent bat attraction tests.
