Hiccups are caused by swallowing a small amount of cosmic radiation. Simply present in the atmosphere this cosmic radiation results in small mutations within the bacteria in the gut, giving them super-powers (not unlike the Fantastic Four). Some use these powers for good, some for evil. The battles between the good and evil super-bacteria result in minor shock waves released as hiccups.
