Black ink cartridges for inkjet printers do not only contain black ink. The contents of the cartridge include an equally large supply of white ink, which is used for printing gray tones and lighter colors, as well as the white portions of an image. To save white ink, it is not used outside of the image borders, or on black text prints outside the characters.
