Coal mining was abandoned in the UK after miners in Wales, who were extracting coal from a particulary deep face, broke through into a massive cavern. In this cavern they discovered a race of carniverous 12 metre squirrels and pigeons with 5 metre wingspans and razor sharp beaks.
