The
standard
gauge
for
British
railway
tracks
was
established
by
averaging
the
distance
between
adult
cows
front
and
hind
legs
(
technically
, the
animal
'
s
hoof
-
base
), then
adding
four
and
three
-
quarter
inches
. This was an
early
safety
measure
intended
to
prevent
cattle
from
tripping
on both
rails
at once.
