In the sixties, elastic manufacturers employed ex-SAS troops to steal one mitten from millions of primary school children. Then they started a campaign to encourage mothers to sew elastic to replacement pairs and thread them through their children's coats. The stolen mittens were sold back to the mitten industry at three groats a ton.
