Beginning in March 1963, the Royal National Institute For The Blind unsuccessfully attempted to break the stranglehold on the "assistance animals" market held by the Guide Dogs For The Blind Association, by experimenting with Guide Rabbits, Guide Woodpeckers, Guide Cats and, in one spectacularly unsuccessful trial, Guide Very Hungry Alligators. The trials were quietly shelved some eight months later.
