In 1969, the last ever specimen of a now-extinct butterfly species was killed in Ainsdale, Merseyside. With a wingspan of over 7 miles, the entire population of the "Eclipse Butterfly" as it was locally known, was soon cultivated by the local inhabitants for the Curtain industry.
