Byron Shadhurt was actually the first man to split the atom. But, as he lost the other half of it, the International Chemists' Committee refused to acknowledge his achievement. Lord Rutherford later succeeded by splitting a red atom held over a piece of white paper, which made it much easier to see the pieces.
