The title of the heir to the French throne - The Dauphin or, more properly, the Dolphin - is but one example of the medieval fashion for naming the king's eldest son after an aquatic mammal. The British 'Prince of Wales' is a later example. Others, now sadly forgotten, include the Narwhal of Galicia, the Sea Cow of Milan and the Grand Walrus of Saxony.
