In recent years Santa Fe and Taos, New Mexico have seen an influx of young urban professionals in search of spiritual enlightenment. So many of these new settlers have been buying stairways to Heaven that air traffic has been impeded in and out of Albuquerque airport. The New Mexico state government has asked the US Federal Aviation Administration to regulate these structures, and tentative guidelines have been drawn up setting standards for their structural integrity, and stipulating that they be marked at 200-foot intervals with flashing red visible for at least three miles in any direction.
