The Great American Forename Famine at the beginning of the 18th century was finally ended by the government passing a law permitting the use of surnames as forenames. Its first beneficiary was Hamilton Smith, born in 1804, who would otherwise have had to be christened Billy-Joe-Jim-Bob Smith.
