In 1982 octogenarian Bruce Tampwell sued the entire world for copyright infringement, claiming that he had been the first person anywhere to include in his answering-machine message, "please leave a message after the beep". Tampwell argued that he was owed two billion US dollars in unpaid licensing royalties from "just about everyone".
