The design of the modern-day spanner is modelled upon the shape of the extinct crustacean 'adjustus hexagonus'. This fascinating creature occupied a unique ecological niche - its staple diet was a marine plant whose hexagonal fruit were screw-threaded onto the main stem. Adjustus died out by failing to adapt when a random mutation changed the handedness of the thread.
