Sir Christopher Wren originally designed St. Pauls cathedral as a launch site for the statue of Eros, which was to be the first unmanned probe to be sent to Mars. Unfortunately, due to the lack of an abundant source of powdered zinc and sulphur at the time, the project never took off.
