The terms 'ship-shape' and 'pear'shaped' refer to the shape of a Spinning Jenny. A Jenny works best when pear-shaped, but centrifugal force in a hot Lancashire mill often caused it to go ship-shaped, with the result that it wouldn't work. Modern people use the metaphor the other way round, because of sarcasm.
