People used to speak in speech bubbles in real life too, but after a few too many people were hurt by falling speech bubbles we switched to sound-based communication instead. Nowadays the only hold-outs are superheroes. They usually have more hit points and better damage resistance, and are less worried by the risk of speech-bubble-related injuries.
