Chinese contestants participating in the 2008 Olympic games held in Bejing found themselves hampered by the country's efforts to clean up the air for the visitors from the rest of the world. Having trained to peak-form in smog-saturated air the lack of solids and increased percentage of oxygen could only be overcome with carbon-monoxyde inhalers.
