The involuntary spasm of the diaphragm muscle that causes hiccoughs was first produced in a Cambridge University laboratory for use as a method of distracting German WWII Luftwaffe pilots. Unfortunately, it escaped by secreting itself in a technician's lunchbox and has now spread throughout the entire world. Ironically, the German race is unable to hiccough.
