In recent Chinese history, one of the more obscure practices implemented by Mao's Cultural revolution was the "Tresses of glorious harmony" initiative, where everyone was forced to stand in a long line to get the exact same bowl haircut. This was thought to increase productivity and discourage vanity among the people.
