Apostrophes
can
be
used
to
substitute
for all
manner
of
missing
items
, not
just
letters
missing
from
words
.
One
of the more
audacious
uses
was when the
English
Crown
Jewels
were
stolen
in
1973
;
one
apostrophe
later
, and the
scandal
that would have
arisen
had the
theft
become
known
was
effortlessly
avoided
.
