Mathematicians were so fed up with being asked whether they had solved Fermat's Last Theorem that they constructed an elaborate conspiracy to pretend that they had. Andrew Wiles' name was picked out of the hat as the "front man" for this ruse. In order to maintain the elaborate pretense all mathematicians that could possibly prove that it has not been solved must sign up to the conspiracy or they mysteriously vanish, never to be heard from again.
