The collusion between the governments of Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, and Equatorial Guinea to conceal from the world the existence of Polar Guinea has been denounced by President Nelson Mandela of South Africa as "one of the most shameful events in the history of modern free Africa". A spokesperson in Conakry, however, explained that it was done "to spare the world further confusion".
